08.30.07 Make Up Your Mind

I'm sitting at a coffee shop, working on a project. A few tables over two guys are talking about web design, looking over websites and critiquing them.

Guy #1: Dude, you've got to check out how awful this guy's website is.
(They type in the address and wait a few seconds)
Guy #2: This actually isn't that terrible. I mean, yeah, it looks like shit, but...

08.26.07 Take Two and Call Me in the Morning

This morning Byron is complaining about his allergies.

"You should take these new Benadryl Allergy strips," I tell him.

"But in the past Benadryl stuff has made me feel dizzy or lightheaded," Byron said.

I shake my head. "No, these are non-drowsy and fast acting. Of course, as usual you should consult your doctor before taking any new allergy medication, especially if you have glaucoma or trouble breathing such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis."

"Well duh," Byron says. I just laugh and say, "And just so you know, when taking the strips avoid alcoholic drinks, be careful when driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery, and be aware that excitability may occur, especially in children."

"That's good to know," Byron tells me.

I'm not sure if this whole thing makes me a whore for Big Pharm, or a slut for them. I think technically whores get paid for their work. I guess I know what that makes me.

08.25.07 Help. Please.

Now that I am officially done with my bartending career (and focusing full-time on Boys from Jupiter), I have some reservations. I think that's fair, considering:

-I don't have a job I have to show up for
-I don't have a boss to keep me in line
-I don't have any plans that cannot conceivably be moved

So how do I structure my life when there isn't any real starting structure in place?

No, seriously, I'm asking.

08.21.07 The Name Game (Part II)

Actual names I've received email spam from recently:

-Fabian Olsen
-Dante Gilmore
-Bod McCray
-Marjorie Dunlap
-Biddy E. McCann
-Bamba Merit
-Mortimer Waters

Why do spammers think that these ridiculous names will fool me into opening their emails? Why?!

08.18.07 The Name Game

"Problematic Names of Women I Went Out With" OR "The Name Should Have Tipped Me Off That It Was a Bad Idea Before It Even Started":

-Melody
-Tanya
-Shawna
-Jadyn
-Kat

NOTE: If anyone reading this has one of these names, I apologize. I'm sure you're a lovely person. I just couldn't do it.

08.15.07 Newspapers are from Mars, Books are from Venus

Earlier this morning Kristine and I went out for breakfast at a local diner. We were the only group of two in the restaurant, which is to say, everyone else there was dining by themselves.

While sitting there, looking around, I couldn't help but notice, without fail, that all the men were reading newspapers and all the women were reading books. What's that about?

Anyone care to offer any insight?

08.14.07 Font Issues

This morning I was searching though a font website, looking up some examples to give a new client some font choices for his website. I was in the sans serif section, happily browsing, when I came across this font:

Sure, Caramella seems like a fine font and all, but does it really belong in the sans serif section? Really?

What are the people over at DaFont.com smoking? Wake up, people! I clearly see serifs! Look! They're right there!

For all you non Fonties out there, it'd be like me getting into the NAACP. Think about it.

08.13.07 Equal Opportunities

The design company that Byron and I run, Boys from Jupiter, has just gotten a big Fortune 500 company as a client. Subsequently, I've been sent a link to their vendor input supplier form profile blah blah blah to enter all the info they need to give us a W-9.

About halfway down the form I get a question asking if we're an MBE, or minority business enterprise.

They ask if we're African/Black American, Subcontinent Asian, Combined Ethnic Group Ownership, Service Disabled Veteran Enterprise, or Woman Owned. Woman Owned!? If our business had been woman owned it goes on to ask for our Women's Business Enterprise National Council certification number.

Woman Owned?! Byron's a gay! What about gay owned!? We've got to get some kind of tax break for that, right?

Sigh. These gays have no rights.

08. 7.07 Ah, the Gipper

The other night I'm playing Trivial Pursuit with a friend. For the third time in the game she guesses Ronald Reagan as the answer. And for the third time Ronald Reagan is not the answer.

"You think Ronald Reagan is the answer to everything," I say. Then, as an aside: "Just like most of the republicans in this country."

Sad, but true.
