11.10.07 Sand Love

Out at a coffee shop, Katie is looking through the Craigslist personals, trying to find me a date.

"This girl loves the beach, Josh," she says. "You love the beach too."

I raise an eyebrow at her. "I do not love the beach," I say. "Maybe you're confused because I'm a Jew, and my people happen to have a fondness for the sand." I pause. "But the beach? I don't like the beach."

And I think that fondness for sand is an acquired taste. It's not like they really chose to be so surrounded by it for such duration. Being first enslaved and then plain lost, this "greatness" really was "thrust upon them".

I always love personals for just this reason. "I like to go out to dinner." Who DOESN'T like to go out to dinner? "Long walks on the beach." Also not helpful. Personals rule.

"my people happen to have a fondness for the sand."

That quote gave me a much needed chuckle.

Personally, I think you should start a dating service. You can call yourself Sir Bergmiester Matchmaker. Oh, Berg, the people will say, show me how to find the love of my life! I like beaches, Berg. Beaches. Do you know anyone else who likes beaches? Think about it. You could make millions.

i used to peruse the craigslist personal ads a fair amount. i'd respond to the funny ones, but as soon as they sent a photo i'd decide not to meet them, superficial as it sounds.
